The general term for white people. Plural of 'umlungu'. It is also an Xhosa word meaning the same thing. There isn't an exact consensus on the origin of this word although a popular theory is that it comes from the Zulu word, 'abulungu', which means white foam(as in white foam bubbles made by the sea). Some Xhosas also say it comes from the Xhosa word, 'Ubulungu', which means to be a member, probably in reference to foreigners becoming new members of their society. Either way, it originates from a time during colonial rule and is now used mostly pejoratively.'tina s'ake kona lapa abelungu be nga kafiki - We built here before the arrival of white people
